Nintendo President Satoru Iwata dies at the age of 55, the company stated today, due to a bile duct tumor according to ABC News. He led the company through years of growth with it’s Pokemon and Super Mario franchises. Also, he was notable for the hugely successful WII and DS consoles.
Iwata, who was the president since 2002, died on Saturday at the Kyoto University Hospital. He was absent from recent game events such as E3 in Los Angeles where he usually participate. According to NBC News, He had underwent surgery in June 2014 to remove a growth on his bile duct, causing him to miss the company’s annual shareholders meeting.
Funeral service for the late Nintendo president Satoru Iwata will be held on July 17. He is survived by his wife Kayoko.
